Negotiators were able to reach political agreement on the new Electricity Regulation and Electricity Directive. In the face of the 21st century’s global energy challenges, the EU is leading the clean energy transition: striving for a more secure, competitive and sustainable energy system which will address the existential challenge of our time – climate change. On the 13th of November the European Parliament adopted new targets for energy efficiency and renewable energy generation as part of its wider package of clean energy initiatives. In particular, it aims to pursue European and International agreements for the creation of the “ Energy Union”. These RSCs are set to develop dynamically over time, building on experience gaine and responding to the challenges of the clean energy transition.


A1G3The clean energy transition is taking on a new dynamic in Europe and worldwide. It gives more power to consumers and protects the energy -poor. It is good for the environment and good for the wallet.

Member States will then have months to integrate the new rules into their national laws. The proposed package includes important proposals in the areas of renewable energies and electricity market design and regulation, energy efficiency and energy performance of buildings. The EU has adopted a package of new legislation that comprehensively updates the EU electricity market rulebook. Finnish Energy has welcomed and supported the package with remarks how to improve it. The European electricity sector is fully committed to the energy transition and the decarbonisation of the European economy.


In detail, these are the new Electricity Market Regulation and Electricity Market Directive as well as the Regulations on Risk Preparedness and the Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER). We are in the business of empowerment. Thanks to many donors, wonderful partners and a lot of hard work, we are very proud to share with you the work we have done. The outlined proposals were published in the framework of the clean energy transition and the changes it has encouraged in the global energy markets. It intends to shift the traditional energy market structure by putting the consumer at the centre of the future energy system, instead of big power plants.


EURELECTRIC is the sector association which represents over 7DSOs, retailers and generators across Europe in public affairs matters in Brussels. The focus of cooperation options is in the area of deploying renewable energy sources, interconnections and electricity market integration. While some countries still very much rely on coal, others have invested massively in renewables.
